What Type Of Accreditation If Better For Sonography?

Sonography is a great career field, but it is important to find the proper school to help you learn what you need to know to perform the tasks required of you.

If you have done research on different Sonography colleges, you have probably heard of accreditation, but may not understand what it is or why you need it.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation means the school with the accreditation meets high levels of quality. This quality is determined by each accrediting agency. For you, the student, accreditation means that school is considered quality and you will be able to take any tests needed for registering yourself and you may even have an easier time finding work after school.

What type of accreditation if better for sonography?

There are two types of accrediting agencies for sonography. These are CAAHEP and ACCSC

The ACCSC’s standards include:

  • Adequate administrative and management capacity
  • Ongoing improvement and assessment activities for the school
  • The school must be financially secure
  • The school must carry insurance
  • Tuition information at the school is given to the student before enrollment
  • Scholarships from the school are honored no matter what
  • Methods for non-paying students are ethical and in good taste

There are many other standards included, which makes this school more sound than an unaccredited school.

CAAHEP standards include all those from above and many more. CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) prides themselves on having different requirements based on each school, as some schools require more requirements.

The CAAHEP is considered an accrediting agency for medical education programs, whereas the ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges) accredits any and all schools deemed ‘made for career-oriented peoples.’ This means that the ACCSC will accredit other schools than medical, whereas the CAAHEP agency is only for medical and, in turn, sonography.

No one accreditation agency is better than the other, though it may be that the CAAHEP is a better accreditation for sonography as they deal only with medical schooling.

How to Find Out If Your School is Accredited

The easiest way to find out if a school is accredited is to contact the school and ask. In most cases, the school will mention accreditation somewhere on their website, which is helpful. However, they will not usually state where they are accredited, which is almost as important.

Find the telephone number of the school in question. If you get a machine, listen for anything that says “administrative or administration” and select that choice. Once connected with someone, simply ask if they are accredited. If they say yes, proceed and ask which agency they are accredited with. If they do not want to give the information, consider choosing a different school.

Now that you know what type of accreditation is better for sonography, you can visit the CAAHEP website at www.caahep.org/Find-An-Accredited-Program. Select the profession (sonography), the state and click search. It will list all schools accredited by them and you can choose which school to attend based on the information you find.
